It’s Christmas Time Again Charlie Brown

“Getting into the Christmas Spirit” is what people call it I guess.  You string lights, buy gifts, put up trees, make cookies.  But that’s not really the “Christmas Spirit” is it?  There’s an air about Christmas, something that makes all the decorating and cookie making mean something.  Christmas brings out the best in people (mostly).  We reach new heights within ourseleves.  We become compassionate, humble, friendly, self sacrificing.  Why can’t we be like this all year round?  I’ve been pondering this for a couple days now, but last night I received some inspiration I had to share with you.   After helping the in-laws decorate for Christmas we all sat and watched “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”  I’ve seen this movie short before, but everytime it comes to the part where Linus says the passage from Luke in the Bible on stage in response to Charlie Brown’s furious question, “ISN’T THERE ANYONE WHO KNOWS WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT?!?!” I cry. and here’s why…

Linus kindly responds, “Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. (lights please) And there were in the same country, shephards abiding in the fields keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them.  The glory of the Lord shown round about them.  And they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘fear not! for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For unto you in born in the city of David, a savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this should be a sign unto you: you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of heavently hosts prasing God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highests. And on earth, peace and good will towards men… that’s what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown.”

Can we just think about this for a second? Our Father in heaven, God… came as a BABY (the weakest form of man) to live a human life, devoid of sin in atonement of our inperfect lives!  That is what christmas is all about.
